BE BEAR AWARE
Mother’s Day at the zoo is an annual tradition which combines bear awareness and a special day out with the moms in your life. Treat them to free zoo entry! Enjoy seeing zoo bears while refreshing your memory on bear safety at the start of another active Alaskan bear season. Memberships apply at the gate as usual. Join us in person at the zoo or on Facebook Live to watch all three bear species at the Alaska Zoo test bear resistant containers. The testing will be black bears at 1pm, polar bears at 2pm, and brown bears at 3pm. Crowds will gather to watch this testing in person at the zoo bear habitats and we will stream it LIVE on Facebook. Will the containers survive the ultimate test? The bears will be the judge of that!
It is also the LAST DAY to enter the McNeil River Bear Viewing Raffle sponsored by the Alaska Zoo and IBA! Buy mom some raffle tickets - she just might win a trip of a lifetime for two to go bear viewing at McNeil River Falls during permit period July 13-16, 2026. The package in includes two permits, two round-trip floatplane fares and $500 toward your Homer stay!
This event will also feature booths from many of our partner organizations from the Anchorage Bear Committee including Alaska Department of Fish and Game and Municipality of Anchorage Solid Waste Services. The Anchorage Bear Committee partners are committed to promoting bear safety and awareness to support co-existence in bear country. Let’s keep Alaska’s bears wild!
