The Alaska Zoo operates through winter with core, permanent part-time or full-time positions. We hire through spring and summer for our busy season.

Two Openings Currently: Admissions Manager and Customer Service Associate

Admissions Manager

Position Information: Full- time, Non-Exempt, Pay: $14.00/hour

Position Summary: The Alaska Zoo is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Admissions Manager. The Admissions Manager is responsible for the direct management and supervision of admissions staff and participation in the day to day operations of the admissions department.

Essential Functions (including but not limited to):

  • Hiring, scheduling, training, supervising, disciplining of admissions staff

  • Ensuring that staff is familiar with and enforcing admissions and zoo policies and procedures

  • Ensuring that admissions staff has a positive attitude toward the visiting public

  • Responsible for inventory management and ordering

  • Attends weekly staff meetings

  • Responsible for pertinent admissions financial records, memberships, attendance records

  • Coordinates with other zoo staff to plan and achieve successful zoo events

  • Resolves customer complaints/issues

  • Ensures the admissions area is kept clean and organized

  • Efficiently and accurately processes customer check-out including cash, check and credit cards

  • Qualified to count and balance cash drawer with accuracy

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Minimum Education Requirement- High School Diploma or Equivalent

  • Minimum Customer Service with Cash Handling Experience Two (2) Years

  • Minimum Supervisory Experience of One (1) Year

  • Food Worker Card or ability to obtain within thirty (30) days of employment

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong computer skills. Previous experience with point of sale systems preferred

  • Strong math skills

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time

  • Ability to periodically lift up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted

  • Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions, when needed

  • Able to work evenings, weekends and holidays

  • Ability to lead, motivate and manage staff

  • Ability to multitask in fast- paced environment and problem solve

  • Successful candidates must be able to successfully pass pre-employment screening, including a background check

  • Able to provide excellent customer service while providing high standards of efficiency, accuracy and consistency

Customer Service Opening for Winter 2019/2020

We are looking to hire a Customer Service Associate to work through the Winter 2019/2020 season with the possibility of staying on for the following summer. Position details are as follows:

  • This position will be for 21-28 hours (3-4 days/week) working across both the Coffee Shop and Admissions service areas.

  • The candidate must have previous customer service experience, with experience in the hospitality industry preferred.

  • The candidate must be willing to work a variety of shift hours between 9am and 9pm as needed, in addition to some holidays (zoo is closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Days) and weekends as needed.

  • Must be able to work well in a team setting, as well as independently during times of slower visitor traffic. Must be able to lift 50 pounds in addition to short periods of work performed outdoors (walking between service areas, helping with zoo closing procedures).

  • As with all zoo employees, the associate will interface with zoo visitors and the general public. The successful candidate will have a willingness to interact with people in a friendly and helpful manner.

  • Duties of this position will include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Selling daily admissions entry to the zoo

    • Selling annual memberships and helping visitors to complete the paperwork

    • Comfort in using the zoo’s registers and computers, training will be provided

    • Preparing food and selling concessions

    • Making coffee and learning to use the zoo’s espresso machine

    • Cooking and preparing food to fill orders in the Coffee Shop’s dining area, in accordance with safe food handling procedures

    • Familiarize oneself with the zoo and the animals who reside here for the purpose of answering visitor questions and engaging with the public
