Distance Learning Coordinator

The Alaska Zoo Education Department is presently seeking a qualified individual for the Distance Learning Coordinator position.

This permanent, full-time position involves developing and leading videoconferencing distance learning programs, distance learning program coordination, booking and invoicing, and assisting with various education events and presentations. Animal experience is essential and candidate must be willing to handle a variety of education ambassador animals, including but not limited to reptiles, birds and mammals. Candidate must possess the ability to work well individually and as a team, and must be comfortable instructing and presenting to all age groups. Excellent communication, organization and time management skills are a must. The ability to develop science-based program activities built to educational standards with a creative flare is also essential. Candidate must have a clean background and submit to a full background check, in addition to holding a valid Alaska driver’s license. Work hours will vary with some evenings, overnights and weekends required based on program schedules.

Customer Service Opening for Winter 2019/2020


We are looking to hire a Customer Service Associate to work through the Winter 2019/2020 season with the possibility of staying on for the following summer. Position details are as follows:

This position will be for 21-28 hours (3-4 days/week) working across both the Coffee Shop and Admissions service areas. The candidate must have previous customer service experience, with experience in the hospitality industry preferred. The candidate must be willing to work a variety of shift hours between 9am and 9pm as needed, in addition to some holidays (zoo is closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Days) and weekends as needed. Must be able to work well in a team setting, as well as independently during times of slower visitor traffic. Must be able to lift 50 pounds in addition to short periods of work performed outdoors (walking between service areas, helping with zoo closing procedures). As with all zoo employees, the associate will interface with zoo visitors and the general public. The successful candidate will have a willingness to interact with people in a friendly and helpful manner.

  • Duties of this position will include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Selling daily admissions entry to the zoo

    • Selling annual memberships and helping visitors to complete the paperwork

    • Comfort in using the zoo’s registers and computers, training will be provided

    • Preparing food and selling concessions

    • Making coffee and learning to use the zoo’s espresso machine

    • Cooking and preparing food to fill orders in the Coffee Shop’s dining area, in accordance with safe food handling procedures

    • Familiarize oneself with the zoo and the animals who reside here for the purpose of answering visitor questions and engaging with the public
