Report Wildlife Concerns

If you have sightings of concern regarding wildlife or birds, see the list of contacts below. Remember that you are not allowed to intervene directly and often human intervention creates additional issues. Many young mammals and birds who are thought to be orphaned are actually left alone intentionally by parents while the move a short distance away to feed or for defense. While the intentions are good, humans often create difficult situations because of their intervention.

One more reminder regarding the zoo - we are only authorized to intake wildlife and birds who are permitted by the governing agencies. We are not allowed to directly receive animals from the public. They must be brought to us through authorized agency biologists or through permitted rehabilitation centers.

If you have bird sightings of concern, take the following steps:

If you have non-marine mammal sightings of concern, take the following steps:

  • Do not intervene directly. A parent could be nearby.

  • Keep a safe distance.

  • Use a mobile device to go to the Wildlife Reporting Form on the Alaska Department of Fish and Game website. Biologists check this often and it is their preferred way to gather all of the information they need to respond to the sighting.

  • Visit the Stranded, Dead or Orphaned Wildlife page on the Alaska Department of Fish and Game website to learn more about how to react to wildlife situations based on the type of animal it is. This is good information to read so you know who to contact before you end up in a wildlife situation.

  • There is a webpage of office contacts on the Alaska Department of Fish and Game website, check here.

If you have a marine mammal sighting of concern, take the following steps:

  • Do not intervene directly. Keep a safe distance.

  • If you see a stranded, injured, entangled, or dead marine mammal, call the NOAA Fisheries Alaska Statewide 24-hour Stranding Hotline: (877) 925-7773.

  • Visit the Stranding Network page for information and inform yourself before you venture out into marine and coastal areas where you could have sightings.
