Internship program objective: The Alaska Zoo Internship Program exists to accomplish the goal of providing a well-rounded experience in a professional zoo setting while also meeting the zoo's needs during our busy summer season which sees many orphaned and injured wildlife through our doors through wildlife agency channels. Interns receive experience in our animal husbandry and education departments with some exposure to zoo administrative tasks. Interns work closely with zoo staff to gain knowledge, animal care experience, public speaking experience and an understanding of the inner workings of a zoo facility.

Internships include:

  • One-on-one work with zoo staff

  • Opportunities to learn firsthand animal care experience

  • Shadowing on veterinary procedures when possible

  • Public engagment through work with education staff in programs

  • Light exposure to the administrative side of a zoo setting

  • A field trip excursion with other interns and zoo staff
