Mobility at the Zoo
The Alaska Zoo has 30 acres of gravel trails which wind through naturally wooded boreal forest. Trails are maintained throughout the year for all conditions. There is one hill near the tiger habitat which is marked as steep and an alternate route is indicated on the black bear bridge. We offer options for those who feel they might need mobility assistance to visit our zoo. See our wheelchair map (pdf). Our trails are gravel so they may not be suitable for every chair.
All-terrain Wheelchair: We have an all-terrain wheelchair available for use at the gate on a first-come basis. This wheelchair is not self-propelled, so a person will be needed to push it. It is designed for gravel trails like ours at the Alaska Zoo, but we caution that there can be areas of deeper gravel caused by recent weather events which may make the wheelchair more difficult to push. The wheelchair is pictured here.
Mobility Cart Rides
Schedule a drive through the zoo on a motorized cart with an experienced volunteer or staff driver. Mobility cart rides are available by advance request. Email us at volunteer@alaskazoo.org. We need at least one week in advance of your ride for scheduling a driver. A non-refundable fee of $25 plus zoo entry rates will be charged at the gate on the day of your ride.
